SHORT REVIEW: Caribbean Bread Box
5/6/01

The food is excellent, very reasonably priced, the premises are very clean, the staff polite and friendly. They have a bakery on premises, hot meals to eat-in or take out. Lots of parking available! Caribbean Bread Box

Located in the northwest corner of Coral Point Plaza near Walgreens and Block Buster Video just off State Road 7 in Margate in Greater Fort Lauderdale, Florida is a new bakery and eat-in take-out restaurant that will impress you with the quality of the food, the friendliness of the staff and the wholesomeness of the atmosphere.

If you visit or live in greater Fort Lauderdale there is a new bakery and eat-in and take-out restaurant that offers excellent, reasonably priced, Jamaican cuisine in one of the friendliest and cleanest settings.

Tucked away in the Northeast corner of the Coral Point Plaza on State Road 7, Caribbean Bread Box is four months new and not easy to find. You have to be in the know and live in or frequent the Margate area to know about this restaurant.

The restaurant is owned and operated by Clement and Margaret Lue and most days you can find Margaret Lue low-keyed and friendly behind the counter.

The bakery operates around the clock to provide fresh baked goods daily. Because they are constantly replenishing the stock of baked goods, there is a very high probability that you will find your favorite baked goods hot and fresh out of the oven when you get there. If it is not hot, Margaret Lue will tell you to come back in an hour or two when the next batch will be fresh out of the oven. This is what happened to me when I visited Caribbean Bread Box. I wanted a hard dough bread fresh out of the oven. Without knowing who I was and that I intended to do a review, Mrs. Lue told me to return in about an hour when the next batch would be available. And so I did.

Like I said, the baked goods are fresh, excellent and reasonably priced:
A large hard dough bread costs $2.75. Imagine a fresh vegetable patty filled with well seasoned callalo for only 85 cents. Beef patties also cost only 85 cents. A large slice of delicious sweet potato pudding costs only $2.00. Bread pudding, banana bread, and rock cake are also very reasonably priced.

Now onto the entrees. One good aspect of Caribbean Bread Box is that they keep the menu simple. All too often, restaurantures place too many items on the menu which usually results poor quality. Not Caribbean Bread Box. They serve only two entrees each day.

On Mondays they serve only oxtail and jerk chicken.
On Tuesdays they serve only curry chicken and oxtail.
On Wednesdays they serve only oxtail and curry goat.
On Thursdays they serve only stew peas and jerk chicken.
On Fridays they serve only escoveitch fish and jerk chicken.
And on Saturdays they serve only steam fish and brown stew chicken.

This means they can concentrate on the two entrees each day. The result is excellent, fresh, reasonably priced meals.

I did not have any of the main entrees, however my associate who introduced me to Caribbean Bread Box eats there on a regular basis and vouched for the tastiness and high quality of all items on the menu. A brief query of some of the patrons substantiated my associate's views.

Ranging in price from $4.50 for small though rather generous servings to $8.50 for the most expensive large servings of items on the menu (fish), all meals are served with mixed vegetables, fried ripe plantains and rice and peas or white rice.

There is also a nice assortment of beverages including bottled water, natural juices and sodas. Again, all reasonably priced.

Considering the high quality of the food that can be had for less than McDonald's prices, I expect Caribbean Bread Box to be a rousing success.
